Bone Density Scanning

Available at ST. FRANCIS eastside, bone density scanning (also called DEXA scanning) is used to determine bone loss and risk of osteoporosis. It is a painless test that uses an X-ray to see mineral deposits in the spine or hip.

This test is especially useful for post-menopausal women, who are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis. Others who benefit from bone density scanning include post-menopausal women who are tall and thin, those with a family history of osteoporosis, those who smoke, and those who take certain thyroid medications.

Physicians use bone density scanning to assess how your bone density compares to both a young, healthy adult and to your peers. The results from a bone density test can help your physician decide if you need to begin treatment for osteoporosis, or to see if your osteoporosis treatment is working.

At ST. FRANCIS eastside, mammography and bone density scans are conveniently located together, so women can complete both exams at the same visit. If you’re concerned about your risk of osteoporosis, ask your physician to add a bone density scan to your next mammogram appointment.
