Who is affected by mitral valve prolapse

Mitral valve prolapse is the most common heart valve abnormality in the United States. Studies estimate that about 2 out of 100 adults in the U.S. have mitral valve prolapse (MVP).

MVP is more common in people with a family history of the condition.
