Happy Chinese New Year!

February 7
A great way to celebrate the Chinese New Year is with a Chinese meal, but make sure your heart is celebrating along with you! Here are some tips for enjoying a healthy Chinese meal:
  • Try “Buddha’s Delight,” a traditional Chinese New Year dish that includes plenty of fresh vegetables.
  • Order chicken, tofu, or seafood that is stir-fried or braised; avoid breaded, battered, deep-fried or “crispy” items.
  • Ask for steamed brown rice instead of white rice or fried rice.
  • Avoid soy sauce, duck sauce, and hosin sauce to lower your intake of sodium.
  • Order a takeout box along with your entrée and immediately put half of your meal in the box to take home for another meal.
  • Enjoy a few mandarin oranges – they are the most popular fruit during the Chinese New Year, and they’re fat free, cholesterol free, low in sodium, and loaded with Vitamin C!

Happy Valentine's Day

February 14
On this day of Love, remember your own heart along with that of your Valentine's. We've written "A Love Letter to Me," a reminder to yourself to take care of your heart this day and everyday. Happy Valentine's to you!

Congenital Heart Disease Week

February 8 - 14
Congenital Heart Diseases that attack the structures of the heart affect as many as 40,000 babies each year in the United States. CHD can limit the activities that affected children can participate in, and many cases of young athletes who suffer sudden cardiac are due to undiagnosed cases of CHD.

Because sudden cardiac death caused by CHD can happen to children who have not even been diagnosed, the best thing you can do to prepare is to learn Adult and Child CPR.

  • To learn more about CHD and how you can help families cope with its effects, visit www.tchin.org.

This week, we salute our Cardiac Rehabilitation Team for the important work they do each day at St. Francis. They not only help our patients recover after heart surgery, they also help slow the progression of cardiovascular disease through promoting exercise and education.
