St. Francis Building Home for Habitat for Humanity
Bon Secours St. Francis Health System is helping families break the cycle of poverty and build long-term financial security through Habitat for Humanity. Habitat believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. Habitat’s message is consistent with part of the mission of Bon Secours: to bring health and wholeness to the communities we serve.
Future homeowner, Tammy Jones works two jobs and says she’s now able to give her children a better future. “Everything has turned around for me. I didn’t have anything, I was almost homeless. Now I feel proud of myself. I feel our home will give us stability, security, and a whole new future.”
Bon Secours St. Francis employee volunteers are building Tammy Jones’ family home in the Sterling Community, just one block from ST. FRANCIS downtown. Habitat’s affordable housing frees up money for other needs for families who are already on a limited budget. Research shows decent housing improves health, increases educational achievement and strengthens community ties.
Bon Secours St. Francis CEO, Mark Nantz said “one of our employees is a recipient of a Habitat home and we are excited to be able to support the great work of Habitat for Humanity especially in the Sterling Community where we are actively engaged through our Community Ministries.”
Bon Secours Community Ministries, which coordinates the Healthy Communities Initiative, serve as the hands and feet that bring our mission to life, reaching out to individuals in our community, especially the poor, the underserved and the dying. In addition to providing health care services, we draw on our Catholic social justice tradition to contribute to our mission. Bon Secours St. Francis Health System is developing long-term, collaborative relationships with the people who live and work in communities we serve to improve the quality of life and health.
Please join us Thursday, February 27, 2014 as we raise the walls of the Habitat for Humanity Bon Secours St. Francis Build. The build continues Friday, Feb. 28 and runs through May 31.
