Happy Chinese New Year!

A great way to celebrate the Chinese New Year is with a Chinese meal, but make sure your heart is celebrating along with you! Here are some tips for enjoying a healthy Chinese meal:

  • Try “Buddha’s Delight,” a traditional Chinese New Year dish that includes plenty of fresh vegetables.
  • Order chicken, tofu, or seafood that is stir-fried or braised; avoid breaded, battered, deep-fried or “crispy” items.
  • Ask for steamed brown rice instead of white rice or fried rice.
  • Avoid soy sauce, duck sauce, and hosin sauce to lower your intake of sodium.
  • Order a takeout box along with your entrée and immediately put half of your meal in the box to take home for another meal.
  • Enjoy a few mandarin oranges – they are the most popular fruit during the Chinese New Year, and they’re fat free, cholesterol free, low in sodium, and loaded with Vitamin C!
